So today we had a workshop to introduce us to the laser cutter and to be shown what we could potentially do with the laser cutter to help us when deciding what to do with our final major project. Below is some photos which I took during the lesson which inspired me to really think about what I could do with the laser cutter. Somethings which I found out was that you use the hairline brush within Adobe Illustrator to cut out the shape that you want and you would use a thicker brush to engrave into the material which you can use. I found out that you can use many different materials to create different effects. For example, you can use wood, card, vinyl, tiles, mirrors, velvet, cloth and glass. There was also questions about using photographic paper, Janet told us that you may be able to use photographic paper but this was something which she hasn't done before so she would like to test it before we try to do it. There are some materials which cannot be cut using a laser cutter and these are polystyrene due to a fire hazard, fibreglass due to toxic fumes, polycarbonate due to difficulty getting a good finish, HDPE and ABS due to the material melting and finally PVC due to the toxic fumes that would be produced. Learning about how to use the laser cutter has really inspired me with what I could do for my final major project. I already have plenty of ideas which are developing in my head.

Jess Glynne - Take Me HomeJess Glynne is an English singer songwriter who is 32 years old. She became famous in the early 2010's. In 2013 she signed a record deal with Atlantic Records where she then released her first single in 2014. But, my inspiration has came from her song Take me home. When she wrote this song she was going through a difficult time where she seemed to be fighting with herself, wanting others to take control of her life to ensure that she finally feels free. It seemed to be a very difficult song for her to have written, with a lot of the lyrics being meaningful. Some of her song lyrics that really stood out to me are as follows:
I will include her YouTube video below for her song Take me home. Chapter 13 - Harder to PretendChapter 13 are a group of young boys which became well known after they had performed on Britain's Got Talent where they got given the golden buzzer. They originally became a band after having performed in the school performance of the School of Rock. The band consists of four members who are; Jake Slack (guitar), Tom Abisgold (Singer/guitar), Noah Key (Drummer), and Jacob Swann (Guitar). But, my inspiration comes from their song called Harder to Pretend. They originally wrote this song surrounding the band member Tom Abisgold's own mental health. The song is raw, open and honest view on his own mental health. Which is clearly something which he has struggled with in the past. One thing that was clear to be mentioned was that the other band members really left Tom with it being focussed that it was his own song. Some of the lyrics that I think are notable are as follows:
Below is the YouTube video of Harder to pretend. All of my research links back to my topic due to the nature of the music above. They both have meanings behind the songs of being mental health and the second song having a deeper meaning of suicide. The second song has deeper meaning of wanting to be able to speak and talk about mental health but they can't because its too hard to talk about.
After having been introduced to our final major project, I knew that this was an opportunity for me to really show who I am as a person and it seemed like something that I could really get my teeth into. When looking at starting a larger project, I really need to think about what I would like to do, what I am passionate about and the time frame in which I will do this in. So I know that I have only 12 weeks to complete this in so therefore, I can't be too ambitious with my expectations, but I shouldn't limit myself either. First things first, I need to generate ideas. The first thing that popped into my head was mental health. I knew that this is something which I would like to explore within my own work to raise awareness for different mental health conditions. There was also a couple of other ideas which I had floating around my head such as the black lives matter social movement, green energy, addiction and poverty. This was all some food for thought so I decided to make a mind map to really jot all of my ideas down so I could visualise what I could want to do. So before finally deciding what idea I would like to do, I am going to do a little bit of research into 3 ideas which are; mental health, Identity and LGBTQIA+. Even though the three go hand in hand, there are some different routes that I could go down if I experiment with each individual topic. Idea 1: The first topic I am going to experiment with is mental health. For me, mental health is such an important topic due to me having mental health issues myself. But within the topic of mental health there are so many different avenues for me to explore, I could go down the eating disorder, mood disorders or even some taboo topics such as self harm. The first thing I do when giving myself a topic is create a Pinterest board as this is a great way to give myself inspiration for different aspects of the topic. Here is a link to the Pinterest board that I created for the topic of mental health. Then I decided to create a moodboard to further develop the intial ideas that I had. After having a look around the internet there was quite a lot of image manipulation and drawing over the top of the images, this is something which intrigues me further into wanting to research more into it. Idea 2: The second topic I am going to research more into is identity. The word identity has different meanings for each person and it varies from age groups, to people. Again the first thing I do when looking at a topic is I create a Pinterest board to bring my ideas into one little page which is easy to see. Here is the link to the Pinterest board. Then I decided to create a moodboard to further develop the intial ideas that I had. Image manipulation seems to be quite a big thing in the world of photography with the topic of identity. This is something which I would like to use in my work in the future. Idea 3: The final topic which I am going to be looking deeper into is the topic of LGBTQIA+. I love to photograph topics which need to have awareness brought to them or topics which are taboo or sometimes not seen as a very popular topic to talk about in society as general. Here is the link to the Pinterest board shown below. With this topic I noticed that there was two main ways to go down, which was being subtle with just having two people in the photograph or being majorly explicit with the gay pride flag being the centre of attention. After putting all of my ideas down, I soon realised that there was one overwhelming topic that I knew that I had to raise awareness for. That topic was:
Mental Health For me, I have suffered with mental health issues and I struggled to talk about it at the time but now, I realised that it was only because I felt like no one really wanted to know how I was feeling and that I was a burden to everyone. So therefore, I try to support people by raising awareness of different mental health conditions. The main reason as to why I have chosen to develop on the topic of mental health is because it is a topic which is close to my heart making me want to complete a series of images to bring awareness to the subject. Plus, I felt like I already had some prior knowledge on the topic of mental health whereas in comparison to the topics of identity and LGBT, I knew a little bit about but not enough information for me to be confident that I am showing a visual representation of the complete truth and not just some pre-misconceptions. |
