Screen printing was first created in China in 221 AD as a way to transfer their designs onto fabrics.. Later on the apanese followed the Chinese and began using a similar technique to the Chinese but they used stencils to create imagery onto fabric. The stencils were made using human hair and paper. At this time stiff brushes were used to push the ink through the mesh to allow the print to come through the stencil. Later on in the 17th century the French began to use silk screens which was a development from the hair which the Japanese used. It is still unknown as to who began to use the silk to stretch over the frame.. Then later on in the 20th century squeegees were first used to push the ink through the mesh from the screen. This seemed to be more of an conventional way of screen printing. There was many different artists which used the screen printing process to create their artwork these include; Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol and Peter Blake. The most well known artist to use the screen printing process was Andy Warhol. Below is an image of Andy Warhol using the screen printing process. Now it was my turn to do this process. First of all we got asked to submit a photograph which must have a simple design which must have aspects that were high in contrast to have a lasting effect once printing. The image which I had decided to use was the one below. I sent this off to my tutor Emma where she showed me that I needed to change the photo into black and white, this was so when you do the printing process it would be an easier process. The actual printing process is shown on this document that my tutor Emma sent us. Unfortunately, I actually forgot to photograph me doing the process, but here are some photos of my peers doing the screen printing process. This is how my own screen printing turned out. Overall, I was really impressed with how this turned out. Considering, I had never done it before, I was really impressed with how it turned out. If I was going to do this again, I would personally experiment more with it by printing the same thing over the original print. To make it look almost like a multiple exposure. In fact I could have two screens and print with them to create a multiple exposure which would make it look really cool. ReferencesLeicesterprintworkshop.com. 2022. As part of a mini project, I took myself upon the task of creating some polaroid's of my classmates and allowing them to draw over the top of them. This is in the style of Jim Goldberg. Jim Goldberg is a landmark photographer and a sociologist during the 21st century. He generally likes to photograph the lives of others who are neglected, ignored and are the outsiders of society to investigate the myths created by Americans surrounding class power and happiness. I had planned over the easter holidays to go and do some location shoots with my family where I would use them as models. But unfortunately I didn't end up doing it due to me becoming ill. However, I did take this opportunity to create a pinterest and look at images that I found on instagram for inspiration. These will be shown below. My Pinterest board is here. These images below are featured on my pinterest board, but I found these really useful and it would be something that I would want to use in the future. Then, I decided to scroll through Instagram and found 4 photographs that really stood out to me.
For this piece of research I wanted to delve more into the field of mental health so therefore, I am basing my work off of facts and not my own preconceptions so my work can be reliable. Borderline Personality DisorderBorderline Personality Disorder (BPD) which is also known as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD) is a disorder that can alter a person's mood and it can also alter how they interact with another person. There are 4 main categories' in terms of the symptoms of BPD which are:
There is no real cause of BPD, but alongside most mental health conditions there are genetic and environmental factors. This being said most people with BPD have suffered from some form of trauma or neglect as a child. There are different treatment options in regards to BPD which may include individual therapy, group therapy, medications for symptoms. Some people with BPD also struggle with who they are as a person, not knowing their own identity which can contribute to their suffering meaning that people with BPD are more likely to suffer from other mental health conditions such as eating disorders, depression, anxiety and many other mental health conditions. DepressionDepression is a mood disorder where an individual may feel low or in severe cases it can make an individual feel suicidal. There are 4 main types of depression which are:
Someone that suffers with depression may feel upset, down, guilty and worthless. They may self-harm, struggle making decisions, using drugs or alcohol and they may have no appetite or eating too much. This being said, depression can be one aspect of another mental illness such as bipolar, BPD and schizoaffective disorder. Similar to other mental illnesses, depression can be caused by genetics, environment and many other life events. There is a lot of different ways to treat depression which are: self-help, talking therapies, medication, coming off of medication, ECT and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation. AnxietyAnxiety is normally a natural and normal response to certain events. Anxiety is when an individual may feel worried or afraid. But there is a certain point in which anxiety is not a normal response. This is when an individual may have an anxiety disorder. There are 9 main anxiety disorders which are:
There are many symptoms of anxiety which are feeling dizzy, worried, nausea, sleeping issues and grinding your teeth. There are many other symptoms but there are too many to mention. There are 4 main factors which can cause anxiety issues which are: childhood experiences, current life situations, physical and mental health problems and drugs and medication. To treat anxiety disorders an individual may use self-help resources which are found online. They may want access to therapy which is available on the NHS or you can pay for private care. Finally they may just want to take medication for their anxiety of which they would need to contact the GP to obtain a prescription. Bipolar DisorderBipolar disorder is a type of mental health condition which affects an individual's mood where the individual may experience, psychotic symptoms, depressive episodes and manic episodes. There are 7 types of bipolar which are; Bipolar 1, Bipolar 2, Cyclothymia, Rapid cycling bipolar, bipolar with mixed features, bipolar with seasonal pattern and unspecified bipolar. Bipolar type 1 is where an individual has had at least 1 manic episode which has lasted longer than around 6 days and they may experience depressive episodes but not everyone that has bipolar type 1 will have depressive episodes. Bipolar type 2 is where an individual has had at least 1 episode of depression and has had hypomanic symptoms for more than four days straight. Cyclothymia is where you have experienced depressive and hypomanic episodes over the period of 3 years and your symptoms may not be serious enough to meet a dianostic criteria of bipolar type 1 or type 2. Rapid Cycling bipolar is where a person has experienced hypomanic or manic episodes followed by depressive episodes. A person may feel stable for weeks at a time between episodes and the episodes last months, weeks or days. Bipolar with mixed features is simply if you can experience manic, hypomanic and depressive episodes at the same time or even very quickly after one another. Bipolar with seasonal pattern is where you have bipolar type 1 or type 2 but it is greatly affected by the time of year or the seasons affect your episodes. Unspecified bipolar is where the experiences that you experience do not fit into the diagnoses of any other bipolar diagnoses. Eating DisordersAn eating disorder is where an individual has a disturbed relationship with food. It may be that someone will be over or underweight or they may be a healthy weight. But anyone can have an eating disorder if they display the correct symptoms. Regardless of their weight, gender background or even age. There are 3 main eating disorders which people are aware about and there are many others which are more unknown. The 3 main eating disorders are: Bulimia, Anorexia and Binge Eating Disorder. Bulimia Nervosa is where an individual may partake in bingeing and purging. Bingeing is where an individual may eat large amounts of food in a short amount of time. Purging is where you act on getting rid of the food after you have eaten the food which you have consumed in a binge. They may take laxatives or make themselves be sick. Anorexia Nervosa is where an individual may not eat enough food causing them to become lethargic. At the moment, anorexia is one of the most deadly mental illnesses due to the amount of times the condition goes ignored. Binge Eating Disorder is where an individual eats a high volume of food in a short amount of time. The person may put on weight, feel sick, shortness of breath, have health problems and develop problems linked to being overweight. Self-HarmThere is a pre-misconception that those that self harm cut their wrists and that they are young girls. However, self harm can be done in any form and by anyone. Self-harm is when someone may hurt them self to deal with pain. It may be a way for someone to have a physical release for emotional pain that they experience, or it could be to escape trauma that they have experienced. There are many different experiences where someone could self-harm these include: Homophobia, Low self-esteem, bullying, abuse and difficult feelings such as anxiety depression or numbness. To help treat self-harm you would need to use short term solutions and also talk to someone about why an individual may self harm. For example, if you spoke to a gp about self-harm, they may refer you for cognitive behavioural therapy, psychodynamic therapy or even dialectical behavioural therapy to help you to understand why and how you may prevent the urges to self harm. ReflectionWhen looking at the research that I have found from the Mind website, I found that there was no origin for where the author found the research therefore, I cannot be one hundred percent sure that the research is valid and reliable.
So, this week we went on a trip to London to visit the Victoria and Albert Museum. So we travelled from Solihull to London and arrived around 11:30/12pm. After having a bite to eat we were left to explore the museum ourselves, so I did not know where to go. Mark, Mel and I went walking around and found some sculptures, of which I found a couple of pieces which I could use as inspiration for my work. For example, I found out about some new sculptors which their name was Auguste Rodin which was created in 1895. This piece is called the Fallen Angel. Below is a photograph of this sculpture. If I am completely honest, this was one of the only pieces which I really thought that would resignate with what my idea of mental health would be. That being said, it does not mean that I admired the beauty of some of the work at The Victoria and Albert Museum as there was some beautiful pieces of work in there.
So today we had a workshop to introduce us to the laser cutter and to be shown what we could potentially do with the laser cutter to help us when deciding what to do with our final major project. Below is some photos which I took during the lesson which inspired me to really think about what I could do with the laser cutter. Somethings which I found out was that you use the hairline brush within Adobe Illustrator to cut out the shape that you want and you would use a thicker brush to engrave into the material which you can use. I found out that you can use many different materials to create different effects. For example, you can use wood, card, vinyl, tiles, mirrors, velvet, cloth and glass. There was also questions about using photographic paper, Janet told us that you may be able to use photographic paper but this was something which she hasn't done before so she would like to test it before we try to do it. There are some materials which cannot be cut using a laser cutter and these are polystyrene due to a fire hazard, fibreglass due to toxic fumes, polycarbonate due to difficulty getting a good finish, HDPE and ABS due to the material melting and finally PVC due to the toxic fumes that would be produced. Learning about how to use the laser cutter has really inspired me with what I could do for my final major project. I already have plenty of ideas which are developing in my head.
Jess Glynne - Take Me HomeJess Glynne is an English singer songwriter who is 32 years old. She became famous in the early 2010's. In 2013 she signed a record deal with Atlantic Records where she then released her first single in 2014. But, my inspiration has came from her song Take me home. When she wrote this song she was going through a difficult time where she seemed to be fighting with herself, wanting others to take control of her life to ensure that she finally feels free. It seemed to be a very difficult song for her to have written, with a lot of the lyrics being meaningful. Some of her song lyrics that really stood out to me are as follows:
I will include her YouTube video below for her song Take me home. Chapter 13 - Harder to PretendChapter 13 are a group of young boys which became well known after they had performed on Britain's Got Talent where they got given the golden buzzer. They originally became a band after having performed in the school performance of the School of Rock. The band consists of four members who are; Jake Slack (guitar), Tom Abisgold (Singer/guitar), Noah Key (Drummer), and Jacob Swann (Guitar). But, my inspiration comes from their song called Harder to Pretend. They originally wrote this song surrounding the band member Tom Abisgold's own mental health. The song is raw, open and honest view on his own mental health. Which is clearly something which he has struggled with in the past. One thing that was clear to be mentioned was that the other band members really left Tom with it being focussed that it was his own song. Some of the lyrics that I think are notable are as follows:
Below is the YouTube video of Harder to pretend. All of my research links back to my topic due to the nature of the music above. They both have meanings behind the songs of being mental health and the second song having a deeper meaning of suicide. The second song has deeper meaning of wanting to be able to speak and talk about mental health but they can't because its too hard to talk about.
After having been introduced to our final major project, I knew that this was an opportunity for me to really show who I am as a person and it seemed like something that I could really get my teeth into. When looking at starting a larger project, I really need to think about what I would like to do, what I am passionate about and the time frame in which I will do this in. So I know that I have only 12 weeks to complete this in so therefore, I can't be too ambitious with my expectations, but I shouldn't limit myself either. First things first, I need to generate ideas. The first thing that popped into my head was mental health. I knew that this is something which I would like to explore within my own work to raise awareness for different mental health conditions. There was also a couple of other ideas which I had floating around my head such as the black lives matter social movement, green energy, addiction and poverty. This was all some food for thought so I decided to make a mind map to really jot all of my ideas down so I could visualise what I could want to do. So before finally deciding what idea I would like to do, I am going to do a little bit of research into 3 ideas which are; mental health, Identity and LGBTQIA+. Even though the three go hand in hand, there are some different routes that I could go down if I experiment with each individual topic. Idea 1: The first topic I am going to experiment with is mental health. For me, mental health is such an important topic due to me having mental health issues myself. But within the topic of mental health there are so many different avenues for me to explore, I could go down the eating disorder, mood disorders or even some taboo topics such as self harm. The first thing I do when giving myself a topic is create a Pinterest board as this is a great way to give myself inspiration for different aspects of the topic. Here is a link to the Pinterest board that I created for the topic of mental health. Then I decided to create a moodboard to further develop the intial ideas that I had. After having a look around the internet there was quite a lot of image manipulation and drawing over the top of the images, this is something which intrigues me further into wanting to research more into it. Idea 2: The second topic I am going to research more into is identity. The word identity has different meanings for each person and it varies from age groups, to people. Again the first thing I do when looking at a topic is I create a Pinterest board to bring my ideas into one little page which is easy to see. Here is the link to the Pinterest board. Then I decided to create a moodboard to further develop the intial ideas that I had. Image manipulation seems to be quite a big thing in the world of photography with the topic of identity. This is something which I would like to use in my work in the future. Idea 3: The final topic which I am going to be looking deeper into is the topic of LGBTQIA+. I love to photograph topics which need to have awareness brought to them or topics which are taboo or sometimes not seen as a very popular topic to talk about in society as general. Here is the link to the Pinterest board shown below. With this topic I noticed that there was two main ways to go down, which was being subtle with just having two people in the photograph or being majorly explicit with the gay pride flag being the centre of attention. After putting all of my ideas down, I soon realised that there was one overwhelming topic that I knew that I had to raise awareness for. That topic was:
Mental Health For me, I have suffered with mental health issues and I struggled to talk about it at the time but now, I realised that it was only because I felt like no one really wanted to know how I was feeling and that I was a burden to everyone. So therefore, I try to support people by raising awareness of different mental health conditions. The main reason as to why I have chosen to develop on the topic of mental health is because it is a topic which is close to my heart making me want to complete a series of images to bring awareness to the subject. Plus, I felt like I already had some prior knowledge on the topic of mental health whereas in comparison to the topics of identity and LGBT, I knew a little bit about but not enough information for me to be confident that I am showing a visual representation of the complete truth and not just some pre-misconceptions. |
